Our Purpose

Our aims are simple –

  • to celebrate black achievement on and off the pitch in rugby union at all levels
  • highlight black role models in rugby, to inspire the current and future generation of leaders.

The Rugby Black List – the Journey

The inaugural Rugby Black List Awards took place on 16th January 2023 at the House of Lords, celebrating and bringing together the Black community within rugby.

Sagan Daniels, founder of the Rugby Black List, began conversations in 2017 around the black experience in rugby, which continued and gathered momentum, particularly during the pandemic in 2020, when the black rugby community came together over virtual calls and social media to share their experiences.
The Rugby Black List Steering Group formed officially in August 2022 and within five months, pulled together their first event, with over 150 guests in attendance, from playing legends to stars of the future, MPs and key stakeholders from across sport and business, as well as community players, coaches and volunteers.

Since the 2023 Awards, the group have been working hard to establish plans to build the network and community around the Rugby Black List and have started planning for the 2024 Awards Event.
